After returning from Spain, you re-register with the municipality by visiting the municipal desk in person with a valid identity document and proof of your residential address in the Netherlands. This is called re-registration in the Personal Records Database (BRP). Most municipalities require you to arrange this within five days of arrival. In this article, we answer the most frequently asked questions about this process, from required documents to the consequences for your health insurance and benefits.
What do you need to re-register in the BRP?
To re-register in the BRP, you need at least a valid passport or identity card, plus proof of your residential address in the Netherlands. The latter can be a rental agreement, deed of purchase, or written permission from the primary resident. Some municipalities also ask for a deregistration certificate from Spain.
Specifically, these are the documents most municipalities request:
- Valid passport or Dutch identity card
- Proof of residential address, such as a rental agreement, deed of purchase, or permission declaration from the primary resident
- Deregistration certificate from Spain (the so-called certificado de baja consular or deregistration from the Spanish population register), if available
- Citizen Service Number (BSN), if you already had one previously
It is advisable to check with your specific municipality in advance which documents they require exactly, as there are minor differences per municipality. Large municipalities such as The Hague and Rotterdam often work with an appointment system; so do not just walk in, but make an appointment online first.
Do you need to deregister in Spain first before returning?
You do not necessarily need to deregister in Spain first before you can re-register in the Netherlands, but it is strongly recommended. Without deregistration, you can be registered in two countries simultaneously, which can cause problems with taxes, benefits, and social security in both countries.
In Spain, you deregister via the padrón municipal, the Spanish equivalent of the BRP. If you were also registered with the Dutch consulate in Spain, arrange your deregistration there as well. If you held a residence permit (NIE or certificado de registro) as an EU citizen, this does not automatically lapse upon departure, but you do not need to actively surrender it.
In practical terms: the sooner you arrange the Spanish deregistration, the smoother the re-registration in the Netherlands will go. Dutch people who move internationally and return notice that municipalities increasingly request a foreign deregistration certificate as part of the administrative process.
How long does it take for your municipal registration to be processed?
Registration in the BRP is processed in most cases on the same day or within a few working days after you have visited the municipal desk. Your BSN remains active or is immediately restored. However, it can take up to four weeks before all government agencies, such as the Tax Authority and the UWV, have processed your new address in their systems.
So bear in mind that the administrative processing takes time. Agencies such as the Tax Authority, DUO, the CAK, and health insurers link their systems to the BRP, but processing does not always happen in real time. Check after a week or two whether your mail is arriving at your new address and whether your DigiD account is still working correctly. If you receive benefits or allowances, it is advisable to proactively notify those agencies of your new address yourself, without waiting for the BRP link to be automatically updated.
What are the consequences for your health insurance after returning from Spain?
After re-registration in the BRP, you are required in the Netherlands to take out Dutch health insurance within four months. If you did not have Dutch health insurance during your stay in Spain, you must register again with an insurer. An acceptance obligation applies: every insurer is required to accept you for the basic insurance.
Once you officially live in the Netherlands again, you no longer fall under Spanish healthcare. If you were entitled to care under the European Treaty or as a pensioner through the CAK, that entitlement lapses at the moment you deregister from Spain and re-register in the Netherlands. Do not leave your insurance uninsured for too long, as without coverage you run a risk and may subsequently receive a fine from the CAK for the period you were uninsured.
Are you entitled to healthcare benefit (zorgtoeslag)? That entitlement revives as soon as you are re-registered and have Dutch health insurance. Apply for this in a timely manner via Mijn Toeslagen on the Tax Authority’s website.
What happens to your benefits and allowances after re-registration?
After re-registration in the BRP, you can once again claim Dutch benefits such as healthcare benefit, housing benefit, and childcare benefit, provided you meet the other conditions. Benefits such as AOW, WW, or welfare are not automatically resumed; you must actively register with the relevant agency for these.
For the AOW, the entitlement to benefit depends on the number of years you have been insured in the Netherlands. A period in Spain can create a gap in your AOW accrual, unless you remained insured through a secondment arrangement or voluntary insurance with the SVB. If in doubt, contact the Social Insurance Bank (SVB) to have your situation assessed.
For housing benefit and other income-dependent benefits, you must notify the Tax Authority of your new address and income situation as soon as possible. You submit changes via Mijn Toeslagen. Do not wait until the end of the year, as a change reported too late can lead to recovery or a missed benefit.
Can you be temporarily registered at the address of family or friends?
Yes, you can temporarily register at the address of family or friends, provided the primary resident gives written permission for this. The municipality requests a signed permission declaration from the primary resident, along with proof of their own registration at that address. This is a legal and widely used solution for people who do not yet have their own home after returning.
It is important to know that registration at an address has consequences for the primary resident. In rental properties, an additional registration can affect the primary resident’s housing benefit, depending on the income of the registered person. Discuss this thoroughly in advance with the person at whose address you are registering.
Temporary registration is also possible in some municipalities via a postal address (briefadres), but this is generally intended for people without a fixed place of residence and is subject to stricter assessment. For most returnees from Spain, registration at the address of family or friends is the most practical route.

Veelgestelde vragen
