Accredited or non-accredited international moving company: what is the difference?

Christiaan van der Ent ·

An accredited international moving company has demonstrably met strict quality and safety standards that are assessed by independent industry organizations such as FIDI or IAM. A non-accredited company has not undergone that assessment and therefore offers fewer guarantees in terms of craftsmanship, insurance, and compliance with international regulations. The difference is significant in practice, especially with an international move where a great deal is at stake.

Below we answer the most frequently asked questions about accreditation, quality marks, and what this means for your international move.

What does accreditation mean for an international moving company?

Accreditation means that a moving company has been assessed and certified by an independent industry organization in the areas of quality, safety, financial stability, and craftsmanship. An accredited international moving company has demonstrated that it possesses the right knowledge of customs procedures, country documentation, and international transport regulations. That accreditation is not a one-time formality, but requires periodic reassessment.

In practice, accreditation means that the company works according to established protocols for packing, transport, and storage. There are also requirements regarding staff, company assets, and complaints procedures. For customers, this means a demonstrable quality guarantee that goes beyond a nice website or a low price.

We at Van der Ent Group are members of FIDI, IAM, and Top Movers Nederland, and have our own customs declarants, our own fleet, and our own storage facilities. This makes it possible to carry out the complete process of an international move within Europe entirely in-house, from packing to customs clearance at the destination.

What risks do you run with a non-accredited moving company?

With a non-accredited moving company, you risk inadequate insurance, poor customs knowledge, and a lack of liability in the event of damage or loss. Because no external quality assessment has taken place, there are also no guarantees regarding staff training, the condition of equipment, or the accuracy of the documentation required for international shipments.

With international moving, correct documentation is essential. Errors in an inventory list, an incorrect customs declaration, or missing country-specific paperwork can lead to delays at the border, additional costs, or even seizure of household goods. Non-accredited companies typically do not have their own customs declarants and rely on external parties who are unfamiliar with the customer’s specific situation.

Other concrete risks include:

  • Inadequate or non-existent goods insurance during transport
  • No clear complaints procedure or dispute resolution mechanism
  • Uncertainty about who is responsible for damage abroad
  • No knowledge of country-specific import rules, such as BPM exemptions when relocating a vehicle
  • Lack of track-and-trace on longer transport routes

What is the difference between FIDI, IAM, and other quality marks?

FIDI and IAM are the two most authoritative international quality marks for moving companies, but they differ in scope and assessment criteria. FIDI is a global network of certified moving companies with its own quality standard, the FAIM certification, which is assessed by an independent audit organization. IAM is a North American-oriented industry association with a broad international network, focused on collaboration and quality assurance.

FIDI and the FAIM certification

FIDI stands for Federation of International Movers. The associated FAIM certification (FIDI Accredited International Mover) is one of the strictest quality standards in the moving industry. Companies are audited every two years by an external party on more than one hundred criteria, including financial health, customer service, staff training, and operational processes. Only companies that meet all criteria may retain their FIDI membership.

IAM and other quality marks

IAM stands for International Association of Movers and has members in more than 170 countries. Membership requires compliance with a code of conduct and provides access to a global network of trusted partners. In addition to FIDI and IAM, there are regional quality marks, such as Top Movers in the Netherlands, which sets quality requirements for Dutch moving companies and actively monitors compliance. Membership of multiple organizations simultaneously, as is the case with us, significantly strengthens the reliability and international network of a moving company.

How do you verify whether a moving company is genuinely accredited?

You can verify the accreditation of a moving company through the member lists on the websites of FIDI, IAM, and Top Movers. These organizations publish up-to-date member registers that are publicly accessible. A company that claims to be accredited but does not appear on these lists is, in practice, not accredited.

Also check the following:

  1. FIDI membership: Look up the company via fidi.org in the member register
  2. IAM membership: Check via iamovers.org whether the company is an active member
  3. Top Movers: Consult the member list on the Top Movers Nederland website
  4. Own customs declarants: Ask whether the company has its own customs expertise or relies on external parties
  5. Insurance documentation: Ask about the goods insurance and the terms for international shipments

An accredited company will provide this information without hesitation. Reluctance or vague answers to these questions are a warning sign.

Does accreditation make an international move more expensive?

Accreditation generally leads to a higher price than with non-accredited providers, but that premium reflects real quality and security benefits. An accredited moving company invests in certified staff, quality equipment, adequate insurance, and correct customs handling. These costs are part of a professional offering, not unnecessary overhead.

Moreover, mistakes by a non-accredited company can ultimately prove far more costly. Think of damage to valuable household goods, delays due to incorrect documentation, additional storage costs abroad, or having to reapply for exemptions such as the BPM exemption when importing a vehicle. These unexpected costs often exceed the initial price difference.

For people moving with a relocation budget from their employer, choosing an accredited company is often also a requirement from the employer itself. Companies and government agencies that relocate employees internationally work almost exclusively with certified relocation services to limit liability risks.

When is an accredited moving company required or strongly recommended?

An accredited moving company is strongly recommended for any international move in which customs handling, import duties, or country-specific documentation play a role. In some situations, accreditation is effectively mandatory: employers who reimburse relocation costs, diplomatic services, and government agencies typically set accreditation as a contractual requirement.

Specific situations in which accreditation is essential:

  • Moving with a car or motorcycle: When importing a vehicle as part of a household move, specific exemptions such as the BPM exemption apply. An accredited company with its own customs declarants guides this process in full, including inspection and vehicle registration. More information about this process can be found on the page about importing a car.
  • Moving to or from countries outside the EU: Import duties, inventory lists, and country-specific regulations require specific customs expertise
  • Moving at the employer’s expense: Most employers and HR departments exclusively accept quotes from certified moving companies
  • Diplomatic and corporate relocations: Government contracts and tenders almost always require FIDI or IAM certification
  • Moving to popular emigration destinations such as Spain: The Netherlands–Spain route, particularly to Andalusia, has specific import rules for which local presence and knowledge are indispensable

With more than a hundred years of experience, an office in Malaga, and our own customs declarants, we are able to fully manage even the most complex international moves, from the first quote to the last crate at the destination.

Veelgestelde vragen
