When moving internationally back to the Netherlands, road transport is generally cheaper for smaller volumes and shorter distances, while sea transport becomes more cost-effective once you are moving a larger household over longer intercontinental routes. The choice depends not only on price, but also on volume, travel distance, transit time, and what you want to bring. In this article, we answer the most frequently asked questions about both transport options, so you can make a well-informed decision.
What determines the cost of an international move?
The cost of an international move is determined by four main factors: the volume of your household goods (in cubic metres), the distance between the departure and arrival location, the chosen mode of transport, and the additional services you use. The larger the volume and the further the destination, the more the choice between road or sea transport matters financially.
Volume is the most decisive factor. Removal companies typically charge per cubic metre, and the amount of space your belongings take up in a truck or container directly determines what you pay. A small apartment’s contents of 15 cubic metres requires a different approach than the full contents of a detached house of 60 cubic metres.
In addition to volume and distance, additional costs also play a role: customs formalities, insurance, packing and unpacking services, storage, and any shuttle service if the removal truck cannot reach the final destination directly. When moving within Europe, country-specific documentation requirements also apply, such as an inventory list in the language of the destination country.
Finally, timing affects the price. Summer peak periods and year-end transitions are busier and therefore more expensive. Those who are flexible in their planning can often negotiate more favourable rates during quieter periods.
When is road transport cheaper than sea transport?
Road transport is cheaper than sea transport when you are moving a limited volume over a European distance. For household goods of up to roughly 20 to 25 cubic metres from countries such as Spain, France, or Germany, a truck is almost always the most cost-efficient choice. The loading costs, port handling, and waiting times associated with sea transport make sea freight relatively expensive for small volumes.
With road transport, you pay for the space actually used in a combined load, also known as a groupage removal or groupage transport. Multiple customers share one truck, keeping the cost per cubic metre low. This model works excellently on routes that are driven regularly, such as the popular Netherlands-Spain corridor.
Road transport is also faster. While sea transport can take weeks due to port and customs handling, a truck drives from Málaga to Rotterdam in two to four days. For people who want quick access to their belongings, that is a clear advantage alongside the lower costs.
In short: if you are returning from Europe with an average to small household, road transport is almost always the smartest and most affordable choice.
When is sea transport the cheapest option?
Sea transport becomes the cheapest option when you are moving a large household over intercontinental distances, for example from the United States, Australia, South Africa, or Asia. Once the volume approaches or exceeds a full 20-foot container (approximately 30 to 33 cubic metres), the cost per cubic metre by sea transport becomes considerably lower than by air or road transport over comparable distances.
For those returning from a country outside Europe, sea freight via the Port of Rotterdam is a proven route. Rotterdam is one of the largest and best-connected ports in the world, making handling efficient. We carry out worldwide removals with our own customs agents, so that port and customs procedures run smoothly without unexpected delays.
There is also an intermediate option: shared container space, also known as LCL (Less than Container Load). Here you share a container with other removals. This is interesting if your volume is too large for road transport but too small for a full container. The costs then fall between those of groupage road transport and a full container.
Sea transport is therefore the smartest choice for large volumes and long intercontinental routes. The lower cost per cubic metre more than compensates for the longer transit time.
What are the hidden costs of road and sea transport?
With both road and sea transport, there are additional costs that are not always visible in an initial quote. The most common hidden costs are customs handling, storage, insurance, shuttle service, and documentation costs. It is important to identify these in advance to avoid surprises.
Hidden costs of road transport
- Parking permits: In major cities such as Barcelona or Madrid, a permit for the removal truck is mandatory. This costs extra time and money if it is not arranged as standard.
- Shuttle service: If the removal truck cannot reach the final destination, a smaller vehicle transports the household goods in stages to the address. This is charged separately if it is not included in the package.
- Toll fees and fuel surcharges: On long European routes, toll fees and fuel surcharges can noticeably increase the price, depending on the route and the season.
Hidden costs of sea transport
- Port costs and handling fees: Loading, unloading, and port handling are not always included in the base price.
- Customs documentation: Import duties, VAT, and the associated administration can add up considerably, especially for moves from countries outside the EU. A removal exemption (such as the BPM exemption when importing a vehicle) can limit costs, but requires correct documentation.
- Storage costs: If the container arrives before you are available, you pay for storage at the port or with the removal company.
- Insurance: Transport insurance is generally not included with sea transport and must be taken out separately. Given the longer transit time and the greater risk of damage, this is certainly recommended for sea freight.
A transparent quote from an accredited removal company specifies all these items in advance. Always ask for an all-inclusive price so that you are comparing like with like.
How long does road transport versus sea transport to the Netherlands take?
Road transport to the Netherlands for European destinations takes two to seven working days, depending on the country of departure. Sea transport takes considerably longer: allow for two to eight weeks for intercontinental routes, including port and customs handling on both sides.
From Spain, one of the most in-demand routes, a removal truck travels to the Netherlands in two to four days. From more distant European countries such as Greece or Portugal, this increases to five to seven days. The transit time for groupage transport may be slightly longer, as the truck stops at multiple addresses before departure and after arrival.
With sea transport, the variation is greater. From the United States, a shipment to Rotterdam typically takes two to three weeks at sea, plus one to two weeks for customs and handling. From Australia or Southeast Asia, the total transit time can extend to six to eight weeks. We offer relocation services with track & trace for international shipments, so you always know where your belongings are.
Those who want their belongings back quickly choose road transport. Those who are willing to wait longer and have a large household from a distant country choose sea. Air freight is a third option for urgent small shipments, but the cost per kilogram is a multiple of road or sea freight and is therefore rarely suitable for a complete household.
Which mode of transport suits your moving situation?
The right mode of transport depends on three key questions: How large is your household? From which country are you returning? And how quickly do you need your belongings? Based on those three factors, you can almost always make the most appropriate and cost-efficient choice.
Choose road transport if:
- You are returning from a European country
- Your household goods are smaller than approximately 25 cubic metres
- You want to receive your belongings within a week
- You want flexibility to add extra items at the last moment
Choose sea transport if:
- You are returning from a country outside Europe
- Your household is large enough for a shared or full container
- You can accept a longer transit time
- You want to save costs on a large volume over a long distance
Not sure? An experienced removal coordinator can quickly calculate which option is most advantageous for you based on an inventory of your household goods. As a family business with more than 100 years of experience, we carry out both European and international removals, including all customs work and paperwork. This way you can be sure that you overlook nothing and return to the Netherlands without stress.
Veelgestelde vragen
