Road transport or sea freight: what is the best choice for an international move?

Christiaan van der Ent ·

When moving internationally, the choice between road transport and sea transport depends on your destination, the size of your household goods, and your timeline. For destinations within Europe, such as Spain, road transport is generally the fastest and most practical option. For intercontinental moves, sea transport is almost always the designated route. In this article, we answer the most frequently asked questions so you can make the right choice well prepared.

What are the main differences between road transport and sea transport?

The biggest difference between road transport and sea transport lies in speed, destination, and the way your household goods are transported. With road transport, a truck travels directly from door to door. With sea transport, your household goods are loaded into a container that is shipped by sea to the destination port, after which local transport covers the final miles.

Road transport is generally faster and more direct. Within Europe, a move by truck can typically be arranged within a few days. Sea transport has a longer lead time: depending on the destination, this can range from a few weeks to more than a month. On the other hand, sea transport is suitable for larger volumes and for destinations that simply cannot be reached by road.

Another important difference is the loading method. With road transport, your household goods are often loaded directly into the moving truck. With sea transport, everything is placed in a container, sometimes as an exclusive shipment (full container load) and sometimes shared with other customers (groupage or LCL). The latter affects both costs and planning.

When is road transport the best choice for an international move?

Road transport is the best choice when you move within Europe and want a relatively fast, direct connection. For destinations such as Spain, France, Germany, Belgium, or Portugal, road transport offers the most convenience: your household goods are picked up and delivered without intermediate transfer points.

Road transport is also the better choice when:

  • You have a fixed moving date and little flexibility in planning
  • Your household goods contain fragile or valuable items that you want to move as little as possible
  • Your destination is easily accessible by road
  • You have a smaller household that does not fill an entire container

For the popular route from the Netherlands to Spain, road transport is by far the most chosen solution. Our moving trucks regularly travel this route, which also means that groupage shipments are possible: your belongings travel along with other cargo heading to the same destination, keeping costs lower without compromising on quality.

When is sea transport more suitable for an international move?

Sea transport is the most suitable option when you move worldwide to a destination outside Europe, such as North America, Australia, Asia, or Africa. Moving by sea is the only realistic choice for these types of routes, both in terms of cost and logistics.

Sea transport is also more attractive when:

  • You have a large household that fills an entire container
  • You are flexible on the moving date and accept the longer lead time
  • Cost savings on large volumes are a priority
  • You are moving goods that are not time-sensitive

We handle international moves via the Port of Rotterdam, with our own customs agents who manage the entire process in-house. This means you are not dependent on external parties for handling customs formalities, which prevents errors and delays.

How much does road transport cost compared to sea transport?

The costs of road transport and sea transport are not easy to compare without knowing the destination and volume involved. As a general guideline: for European destinations, road transport is often cheaper or comparable in price, while sea transport is more cost-efficient for large volumes over long distances.

With road transport, you typically pay for the volume in cubic meters and the distance. With groupage moves, you share the transport costs with other customers on the same route, which lowers the price per cubic meter. With sea transport, in addition to freight costs, there are also additional costs such as port fees, documentation costs, customs handling, and local transport from the port to your new address.

What determines the total price includes, among other things:

  • The volume of your household goods (in cubic meters)
  • The destination and the distance
  • Whether it is an exclusive or shared shipment
  • Additional services such as packing and unpacking, assembly, or storage
  • Insurance of household goods in transit

We always advise requesting a tailored quote so you get an honest picture of the actual costs for your specific situation.

What happens to your household goods in transit with each type of transport?

With road transport, your household goods are carefully packed and loaded directly into the moving truck. The belongings travel in principle without intermediate transfers from your address to the destination address. This limits the number of times your household goods are handled, which reduces the risk of damage.

With sea transport, your household goods are first packed, then loaded into a container, and subsequently shipped via the port. After arrival at the destination port, the container is unloaded and your household goods are delivered locally. These are more steps, which also requires more attention to the packaging and protection of fragile items.

In both cases, good household contents insurance is essential. We always advise our customers to adequately insure their household goods for transport, regardless of the chosen transport type. For international shipments, we offer track-and-trace so you always know where your belongings are.

Which type of transport is best suited for a move to Spain?

For a move to Spain, and specifically to the Andalusia region, road transport is by far the most chosen and most practical option. The route from the Netherlands to Spain is well accessible by road, and the travel time is generally between two and three days, depending on the exact destination.

We serve the Andalusia region from our branch in Malaga, an area that is particularly popular with Dutch emigrants, expats, and retirees. Think of the coastline from Malaga to Marbella and Cadiz. Because we regularly travel this route, we can also offer groupage moves: a cost-efficient solution where your household goods travel along with other shipments heading to the same region.

Sea transport to Spain is theoretically possible, but in practice of little use. The higher cost and longer lead time do not outweigh the advantages of a direct road connection. Moreover, sea transport involves additional logistical steps, such as port handling and local transport, which are not necessary with road transport.

Veelgestelde vragen
