When moving within Europe, the risks differ from those of intercontinental moves. Within Europe, transport is often by truck, which is relatively stable. Nevertheless, poor roads, changing weather conditions, and loading and unloading at multiple locations can cause damage, especially to fragile or valuable items such as artwork, antiques, or electronics.

Beyond physical damage, documentation errors are one of the most underestimated risks. Missing or incorrect customs paperwork can lead to delays, additional costs, or even seizure of your household goods. Safe packing for an international move starts with sturdy, move-specific materials: double-walled cardboard boxes, sufficient filling material, professional packing paper, and protective covers for furniture. Fragile items deserve extra attention with special cell or foam packaging. Consistently labelling every box, including contents and destination, is essential for an orderly arrival.

For furniture, disassembly before transport not only saves space but also prevents damage to walls, floors, and the furniture itself. A professional moving company records a video of the existing assembly beforehand and consults instructions where needed, so that everything can be reassembled flawlessly at the destination.

The following categories deserve special attention:

Electronics: use the original packaging or equivalent foam packaging and remove loose components.
Artwork and antiques: have these packed by specialists; standard moving materials are insufficient here.

Limited coverage: covers only damage caused by specific events such as fire or traffic accidents.
No insurance: technically possible, but financially risky in the event of damage to valuable household goods.

At customs, your household goods are inspected on the basis of the submitted documentation, including a detailed inventory list, proof of ownership, and in many cases proof of residence in the destination country. If all paperwork is in order, clearance proceeds smoothly. Missing or incorrect documents lead to delays, additional costs, or seizure.

For moves outside the European Union, additional rules apply. For example, under certain conditions you can make use of a removal exemption, which allows you to avoid import duties and VAT. Keeping track during an international move is done by preparing a detailed inventory list in advance, numbering and labelling every box, and using a mover that offers track & trace. This way you know at all times where your belongings are and can check immediately upon arrival whether everything is complete.

A good inventory list is more than a simple enumeration. It is also important for customs, for your insurance, and for an orderly unpacking process at the new location. Note per box the contents, the destination room, and any special characteristics such as “fragile” or “high value”. Photograph valuable items before the move as proof of their condition prior to transport.

Kan ik persoonlijke of waardevolle documenten meenemen in mijn verhuislading?

Informeer tijdig bij de ambassade of consulaire dienst van het bestemmingsland naar de exacte eisen, want de voorbereidingstijd voor huisdieren kan oplopen tot meerdere maanden.

Is het goedkoper om zelf te verpakken in plaats van dit door de verhuizer te laten doen?

Zelf verpakken kan kosten besparen, maar brengt ook risico’s met zich mee: als schade ontstaat door onvoldoende verpakking, vergoedt de verzekering dit mogelijk niet of slechts gedeeltelijk.
